CULTOWEEN 2017: My 5 Favorite Films for Halloween by Michael Tatlock

We asked our contributors: what are the five films that you love to watch the most for Halloween? As horror fans, we watch genre films all year ’round, but there’s something special about checking them out when the nights are crisp, the leaves are blustery, and the orange lights are glowing. Here are five films for Halloween from our co-editor Michael Tatlock.

Halloween, a glorious time of the year for many horror fans.  Gory and scary movies are playing on TV pretty much 24/7, and you get to go out wearing your morbid horror tee without having people give you the weird stink eye. For a lot of fans, they use this time of the year to watch 31 horror films in 31 days, something I’ve only taken part in once and found it incredibly exhausting. You see, I usually watch horror movies all year round, so Halloween isn’t anything super special for me, as Halloween is year-round in this household. However, if I were to watch five movies to get me in the spirit, I would definitely watch these…

Halloween (1978)

Obviously, the original Halloween is the number one flick to watch to get in the mood for the spooky holiday. A white masked shape stalking the babysitters on Halloween night. What more could you ask for?

Halloween II

I include Halloween II on the list, as it picks up exactly at the end of the original Halloween and to me, the films are basically one long, kickass Halloween experience. The empty dark halls of the Haddonfield Hospital, while Michael Myers (played by Dick Warlock) hunts down his sister (revealed in this sequel), Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). Makes me want to watch it right now.

All Hallows’ Eve

I love anthology films, and I love creepy clowns. All Hallows’ Eve provides both of these things I adore into one tight little horror package, that doesn’t mind showing some graphic violence.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

For the past eleven years, I have watched Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Why do I do that? No idea, as it just became a tradition to watch this rather cheesy horror flick starring Tom Atkins. Lots of people hate that this film had nothing to do with Michael Myers, but if you ignore that and just think of the film as a one-off Halloween themed flick, you might actually find yourself loving it as much as I do.

WNUF Halloween Special

WNUF might not be as well known as some of the other movies on this list, but it ranks up as one of the most enjoyable Halloween-themed flicks to watch. Produced to look like it was recorded in the ’80s on VHS, it follows a reporter who is investigating a supposedly haunted house on Halloween night. Chalk full of vintage commercials and a pretty dark ending, WNUF Halloween Special is a movie that should be watched every Halloween.

BONUS: Satan’s Little Helper

Featuring the smoking hot Katheryn Winnick and a hilarious villain in a cheap Halloween costume, Satan’s Little Helper is Jeff Lieberman’s shot at making a fun movie, and it works.
