As we edge closer to Friday the 13th, we move on to pitting Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter against Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. One film attempted to kill off Jason Voorhees, but also introduced a recurring character by the way of Tommy Jarvis, the other film introduced Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees and a telekinetic final girl for the undead killer to battle. Both have positives and negatives, but one movie stands above the other. Read on to see if you agree…
Nudity
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
After Friday the 13th Part III was a pretty dry affair in regards to nudity, The Final Chapter decides to amp up the exposed flesh by giving us some beauties showing off their naughty bits. Judie Aronson strips down to her birthday suit and I rejoice! The twins go skinny dipping and for you ladies, Crispin Glover goes full frontal. Okay, kidding, but we do see some guy butt.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
The New Blood also comes after a dry affair in Jason Lives, but they don’t show as much nudity as The Final Chapter does. We see some nice boobies and the backside of one lady who goes skinny dipping. There are a few stylistic shots underneath the water looking up at her swimming. Still, not much is seen.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Kill Creativity
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
The Final Chapter has a pretty brutal Jason Voorhees played by Ted White and he wastes no time dispatching teens. Highlights include a speargun to the crotch, a corkscrew/cleaver combo, and a wicked thrown axe through a door. There are a few standard kills that don’t impress (Rob’s kill is hilarious), but the one kill that makes this film is in fact, the death of Jason Voorhees by the hands of Tommy Jarvis. It’s brutal!
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
The New Blood was Kane Hodder’s first time at Jason and he goes broke with the kills, but sadly, the film’s gore is trimmed down so much, you hardly see anything. Still, we have a party horn used interestingly, an axe to the face, a buzzsaw to the stomach, and a man’s head squashed like an orange. Still, lots of kills are tame and just not as creative as The Final Chapter.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Killer Coolness Factor
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
This is a pretty tough one. I love the look of Jason Voorhees in The Final Chapter. His mask is looking damaged, and his face reveal is amazing, thanks to Tom Savini’s amazing effects. He also doesn’t take any shit from anyone. However…
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
The New Blood‘s Jason Voorhees is a walking, rotting zombie and he just looks outstanding. Kane Hodder’s mannerisms are what make his Jason Voorhees so memorable. His heavy breathing and head tilts are cool and seeing Jason Voorhees fly through a window is something you’ll never forget.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Story
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
An axe to the head won’t put Jason Voorhees down for long. He escapes the county morgue, not before killing a few randy nurses, and heads back to Crystal Lake. Meanwhile, a group of party going teens head to the lake to have a good time, and next door Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) is enjoying the view. In no time, Jason Voorhees shows up to murder a whole bunch of horny teens, but Tommy Jarvis has other plans. Cue the “death” of Jason Voorhees!
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Jason Voorhees is raised from the dark depths of Crystal Lake by a telekinetic girl, who thought she was bringing her dead father back. Meanwhile, a group of party going teens head to the lake to have a good time, and next door Tina is not enjoying her therapy. In no time, Jason Voorhees shows up to murder a bunch of horny teens, but Tina has other plans. Cue the terrible ending.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Lasting Appeal
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Some really good nudity, Tom Savini doing the special effects, Tommy Jarvis, and the death of Jason Voorhees. This is one film that I can always pop in and never be bored with.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Even though Jason Voorhees looks awesome and Kane Hodder’s first time playing him is exciting, the film just doesn’t have the same lasting appeal of The Final Chapter. It isn’t overly gory, there isn’t a lot of nudity, and the characters are dumb and keep wandering off into the woods. I like the film, but I would just rather watch The Final Chapter instead.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Final Girl
Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
Kimberly Beck plays Trish, the final girl and she just doesn’t have the acting skills to make her stand out among better final girls. She just does a lot of running and screaming, only fighting back a bit near the end. If it wasn’t for Tommy Jarvis saving the day by shaving his head, she would end up dead.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Lar Park-Lincoln’s Tina Shepard does have her times of pouting and hysterics, but once she pulls out her telekinetic powers, she rises to the top and becomes pretty damn sweet. There are other better final girls in the series, but when you pit her against Trish, she stomps all over her.
Winner: Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
That leaves us with an overall count of Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter: 4 to Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood: 2, which means
