It’s getting nicer outside, at least here in upstate NY, and that’s definitely got me thinking about the beach; though I don’t live close to an ocean, I still find water creatures to be a particularly scary part of the horror genre. Let’s take a look at the clear Jaws rip-off Mako: The Jaws of Death as today’s poster of the day, shall we?
Normally, Horror Movie Poster of the Day is meant to pick out some of the best horror posters for more obscure films, but in the case of Mako: The Jaws of Death, the opposite is true. Just take a look at that generic-looking poster: it certainly does its job well enough, attempting to capitalize on the critical acclaim of Jaws released just one year earlier. But its most confounding offering is that disembodied hand at the top of the water. One must question: to whom does that hand belong, and where is he?
Logically, if the shark had already eaten the rest of the body, there would be blood in the water. But the hand also wouldn’t float to the top as though pleading for a boat to rescue him. This truly bothers me, more than the connotation that a giant killer shark is eating people.
Truthfully, this isn’t the only Mako: The Jaws of Death poster.
This one features a much better attack scene, although there’s still the problem of dreaded “eraser boob” and another particularly bad representation of a hand, with all fingers and no thumbs.
