Two from Hell: House of 1000 Corpses & The Devil’s Rejects Blu-ray Review (Umbrella Entertainment)

Umbrella Entertainment has taken their two previous releases and put them together into one package. Unfortunately, the missing features are still missing.

My relationship with Rob Zombie is rocky at best. I enjoyed his earlier music with White Zombie to his Hellbilly Deluxe album. When it came time for him to venture into directing films, I gave him a chance. His first effort, House of 1000 Corpses was an entertaining film; however, his second film The Devil’s Rejects was a foul-mouthed slog to get through. When it comes to his remake of Halloween and his sequel Halloween II, my opinion has been expressed several times before, and I feel like I’m in the majority when I say they aren’t that great. He seemed to have rebounded with The Lords of Salem, which impressed me enough to raise him in the ranks a bit. I never did get around to 31, but I haven’t heard too many positive comments. Even though I always complain about most of his films, I seem to keep coming back to them in one way or another. This time around I checked out a Blu-ray two-pack from Umbrella Entertainment titled Two from Hell, which includes House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. The name is meant to be a tie-in to Zombie’s upcoming sequel to the films titled 3 from Hell.

Umbrella Entertainment has previously released both House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects on Blu-ray, and after running a BD-Info compare for The Devil’s Rejects, I can tell you those two releases are the same. (I’ve already reviewed The Devil’s Rejects Umbrella Blu-ray before, so you can check out that shitty review if you like.) I don’t own the previous House of 1000 Corpses Blu from Umbrella, but after a bit of research, they do look to be the same disc.

If you own the previous releases, there will be no reason to pick up this edition. However, if you never bought them before and want to save some space on your shelf, this two-pack is going to be a worthwhile buy. The biggest complaint about the release is the missing lengthy Making-of for The Devil’s Rejects, but that was missing in the previous release as well. The video quality for House of 1000 Corpses is quite nice-looking, with bits of speck showing up on the screen, but I believe Rob Zombie intended to have those in the transfer. Colours are certainly rich and vibrant, which is great as the film splashes plenty of colours onto the screen. The Devil’s Rejects also looks fantastic, even with just MPEG-2 video. The transfer looks just as sharp as the Lionsgate American release.
